Fw from DSCC: Don't Be Distracted by Anti-Filibuster Rhetoric

Dear Dave,

Don't be distracted.  Bill Frist and the Senate Republicans are trying to deflect your attention so they can pack our federal courts with ultra-conservative nominees who will spend their lifetime appointments on the bench taking away the rights of average Americans, hurting our environment, protecting corporate interests and striking at the very core of protections that this country holds so dear.

We won't let them get away with it.  Twenty thousand Americans have already signed the DSCC petition telling Bill Frist to stop changing the subject.  We'll send all of those signatures, as well as any more we receive today by 4:00 p.m. ET, to all the major newspapers in Tennessee.  We'll put the pressure on Bill Frist in his own backyard.

Sign the DSCC petition by 4 p.m. ET today!

Instead of telling us exactly what these judges will do, Bill Frist is now wildly accusing Senate Democrats of somehow using the filibuster "against people of faith" simply because we have stopped 10 of the most extreme judicial nominees out of 215 nominated by George Bush.  This is a scurrilous and absolutely false charge designed to ignite the right-wing base and distract from the real issue.

Let me be clear.  Judicial nomination filibusters are not about preventing people of faith from holding public office.  They are not even about the continued existence of the obscure but important Senate rule that allows for these filibusters.  When you get right down to it, this fight is about whether our federal judges will defend your rights.

Senate Democrats are fighting to make sure that our judicial system is always there to protect your rights.  We won't let Bill Frist tell us that we're anti-religion and we won't let him try to deflect attention from these nominees by talking about the arcane history of the filibuster.

If you sign our petition by 4:00 p.m. ET today, you can be part of the throng of thousands that we send to all the major Tennessee newspapers.  We'll tell Bill Frist that the American people won’t accept an ultraconservative federal judiciary.

Sign the DSCC petition by 4 p.m. ET today!

We are gearing up for an important fight –- not over the role of religion in public life, not over the use of the filibuster in a few specific cases, but over the very future of our federal courts, including the Supreme Court.  Your participation is of paramount importance.  Please sign the petition today by 4:00 p.m. ET.
